The other day I was walking in the city when a friend saw me on the other side of the street. I hadn’t seen him, so it was a surprise when I heard my name. I turned round and saw him. He asked me if I wanted to go to the cinema that night, but I had to tell him that I couldn’t because I had already agreed to go out with my cousin.

- así que fue una sorpresa cuando oí mi nombre / so it was a surprise when I heard my name.
- Me di la vuelta / I turned round
- y le vi / and saw him. (I saw her = la vi)
- Me preguntó si quería ir al cine esa noche / He asked me if I wanted to go to the cinema that night (Cuidado: I asked him = Le pregunté)
- pero tuve que decirle que no podía / but I had to tell him that I couldn’t
- porque ya había quedado con mi primo para salir / because I had already agreed to go out with my cousin. (Cuidado: Me había quedado = I had stayed / Había quedado = I had agreed to…)
